William Brown Appointed as Next Oroville Union High School District Superintendent
Brown to begin tenure on June 1, 2023
(Oroville, CA) William Brown, a longtime educator with deep experience as a collaborative leader with a focus on building academic goals, instructional programs, and professional development, has been selected as Oroville Union High School District’s (OUHSD) next Superintendent. The appointment was approved by the Board of Trustees at their May 17th meeting.
Mr. Brown comes from the State of California in Sacramento, where he has served as the Deputy Secretary of Human Services since October 2020. He began his career in education in 1999 as a math teacher at Grant Union High School in the then-Grant Joint Union High School District (now Twin Rivers Unified School District) in Sacramento where he also coached the championship football team. He went on to become a Head Counselor at Norwood Junior High School before moving onto becoming a vice principal then principal at high schools in the same district. In 2017, Mr. Brown moved into district administration as the Director of Human Resources for West Contra Costa Unified School District, and Chief Human Resources Officer for the Riverbank Unified School District.
The opportunity to return to educational leadership and his hometown of Oroville is what attracted Mr. Brown to the superintendent position and OUHSD. “My family has roots in Oroville. My father started a church here when I was young and for most of my life, Oroville has been a special place for my entire family,” said Mr. Brown. “Also, Oroville is a place where people work hard and have high hopes for their children, they understand the power of a good education. I want to be a part of making sure the kids of this community get a world class education, a great experience and walk away prepared for whatever future they choose for themselves.”
Mr. Brown received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from CSU, Fresno. He earned his Administrative Credential through the Sacramento County Office of Education’s School of Education and Masters of Arts in Educational Counseling from National University. He is a member of the Association of California School Administrators and the California Association of African-American School Administrators.
“Following interviews by our advisory panel and trustees, Mr. Brown was the overwhelming number one choice of both groups,” said OUHSD Board of Trustee Ray Sehorn. “We all feel he has the experience and personality that best fit OUHSD and our community!”
Mr. Brown begins his tenure on June 1, 2023. “I want to connect and engage with as many members of the community as possible; staff, students, parents, community, etc. I want a clear understanding of their hopes and expectations of the schools and the District. My hope, and I plan to work tirelessly toward this, is to overdeliver. What would I hope to see if I were in their shoes?” said Mr. Brown.
