Earned Income Tax Credit Information Act
Know your benefits—file even with no tax due and claim credits that aid your family
You may be eligible to get extra money back from the government through the Earned Income Tax Credit, also known as EITC — even if you do not owe any taxes.
What is the Earned Income Tax Credit?
The EITC is a cash refund that supports low-income individuals and families who work. There are two types of EITC you may qualify for:
1. Federal EITC (from the IRS)
-
This is a refund from the federal government based on your income.
-
It does not affect benefits like CalFresh (food stamps), Medi-Cal, SSI, or housing assistance.
-
You must file a federal tax return to receive it, even if you do not owe taxes.
-
Look for the Earned Income Tax Credit section in the IRS tax booklet or ask your tax preparer for help.
If you have questions or need help:
Call the IRS at 1-800-829-3676
Visit the IRS EITC webpage at www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/earned-income-tax-credit
2. California EITC (from the State of California)
-
This is a refund from the state of California to help working individuals and families.
-
It does not affect your eligibility for other benefits.
-
You must file a California tax return and complete Form FTB 3514 to claim it.
