• Oroville Demographics

    The Oroville Union High School District is located in the rural north valley at the base of the Sierra Nevada foothills, about seventy miles north of Sacramento. The district encompasses 723 miles of eastern Butte County. The district has two comprehensive high schools, one continuation school, one community day school and one adult education school.  The Butte-Glenn Community College and California State University, Chico are located approximately 25 miles from Oroville.

    Oroville is the Butte County seat and the primary source of income for the city's population of 20,737 residents (55,000 in the greater Oroville area). Other significant sources of income are agriculture, light manufacturing, tourism, retail trade services, transportation, public utilities, construction, finance, government and public administration.  The 2017 median household income in the city was $37,721.

    Comprehensive High Schools

    Oroville High School was founded in 1892 and is the oldest high school in the district. The eighteen-acre campus has fifty-five classrooms and seven computer labs, which are all connected to the Internet. The building has seen several upgrades over its many years in existence. Bond Measure, J, which passed in 2002, provided monies for a new science building, industrial technology building and library and modernization of the gymnasium. Most recently, Oroville High added new baseball and softball fields. Oroville High School is supervised by 2 administrators and employs 75 staff members. There are approximately 935 students enrolled at the school.

    Las Plumas High School was established in 1960 as the second comprehensive high school to alleviate overcrowding at Oroville High School. The sixty-four acre campus is the largest school in the district. The original buildings have been supplemented during growth phases by 40 portables. Bond Measure J, which passed in 2002, provided the monies for the new gymnasium, agricultural science lab and classrooms, fine arts complex and modernization of the existing classrooms. Las Plumas High School is supervised by 2 administrators and employs 95 staff members. There are approximately 1300 students enrolled at the school. 

    Both campuses offer a traditional high school time schedule.  There is a consultation period four days per week in which students can visit their teachers to get extra help, make up tests, and to hold meetings for Individual Education Plans (IEP’s), Section 504 Plans and Student Study Teams (SST’s).  There is a teacher collaboration period held every Wednesday morning to allow teachers to meet as departments, compare assessment results, attend faculty meetings, etc. 

    Prospect High School

    Prospect High School is the district’s continuation school.  The school was founded in 1969 and currently serves approximately 115 students who are credit deficient or in need of a smaller school environment.  The school is WASC accredited and was chosen by the State of California as a Model School in 1994 and in 2000.  Prospect High School shares 17 staff members with Community Day School.  An Early Head Start Center for teen parents is also located on the Prospect High School campus.

    Community Day School

    The OUHSD Community Day School was founded in 1999.  The school serves approximately 15 students who have been referred there by expulsion, probation placement or truancy referral. The restrictive environment offers an educational option for students with high expectations, whether the student is performing at or above grade level, or in need or remediation in one or more academic areas. Community Day School shares 17 staff members with Prospect High School.

    Oroville Adult Education Career and Technical Center

    Oroville Adult Education Career and Technical Center consists of an adult education program, an adult transition center and also houses the district’s independent study and home hospital programs.

    Oroville Adult Education serves approximately 1500 youths and adults annually with academic and vocational programs.  Academic programs include High School Diploma, General Education Diploma (GED) and HiSET high school equivalency preparation, computer applications, job readiness, English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), independent study and Career Exploration. Vocational Certification programs include Office Technology and Accounting.  Medical certification programs include Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).  Oroville Adult Education also offers “Community Education Classes” on an affordable fee-based schedule.  Classes include Tai Chi, water color, digital photography, American Sign Language and Spanish.

    The Adult Transition Center serves severely handicapped special education students from age 18-22.  The program serves approximately 30 students, who are supported by 13 staff members.  The program is designed to transition students into their adult life by teaching skills, such as independent living, vocational training, social awareness, leisure/recreation, continued education/training, and life-long learning opportunities.

    The district’s independent study program serves approximately 70 students, who are supported by 4 staff members.  Students in this program meet with their teacher for a minimum of one hour per week to turn in work and receive an additional week of work to do at home.  They are still enrolled at their home school and can participate in extra and co-curricular activities.

    The district’s home hospital program serves students with a temporary disability which makes school attendance impossible or inadvisable.  Students in this program shall receive individual instruction in their home or in a hospital or other residential health facility.
