Volume 3 I. FINANCIAL
AID FORMS
Who should complete the two Financial Aid Forms (FAFSA and GPA
Verification Form)?
A. Any Senior planning on
attending a 4-year College or University, a 2-year Community
College or a Trade or Vocational School should apply.
B. The California Student Aid Commission which processes applications for
financial
Aid is encouraging all high school seniors in California to complete the
Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Grade Point Average
(GPA)
Verification form. Both are
to be postmarked no later than March 2, 2003. 1.
The GPA Verification form will be submitted for you electronically this
year, which means you will not have to complete a separate form. However, your Social Security number is needed to do this.
If you received a form from the counseling office requesting your Social
Security number, please return it as soon as possible to the counseling office.
2.
The FAFSA form cannot be sent before January 1, 2003 a.
You are encouraged to apply on-line for the FAFSA.
Right now, you and your parents can prepare for
this by getting a FAFSA Pin. 1.1.
Log on to the Internet and go to www.fafsa.ed.gov
. Then click on the “Getting Started”
button and follow the prompts.

To file a FAFSA online, students need a PIN and parents or guardians
need a PIN too. So get a PIN
for you and your parents or guardians

D. Once
your GPA is submitted electronically, you are eligible for Cal Grant Awards. 3.
Cal Grant A Entitlement Award – a.
Must

January 1, 2003 and no later than March 2,

Yours will be submitted electronically for you. e.
This award pays full fees at CSU and UC campuses.
It also provides
tuition support at private California colleges and universities. 3.
Cal Grant B Entitlement Award – a.

This award provides up to $1551 for books and living
expenses for the

the first year. Beginning with the second year, this award also helps pay for tuition and fees at
public or private 4-year colleges. 4.
Cal Grant A, B and C Competitive Awards a.
These awards are similar to Cal Grant A and B Entitlement Awards except
that
they are not guaranteed. b.
Cal Grant A Competitive Awards are for students with a minimum 3.0 GPA from low to middle income families. c.
Cal Grant B Competitive Awards are for students with a minimum 2.0 GPA and are from disadvantaged and low
income families. d.
Cal Grant C Competitive Awards assist students with tuition, fees and
training costs for occupational and vocational
programs. 5.
Submitting the GPA Verification Form a.
For the first time, the information needed for this
form will be submitted electronically. You
DO
NOT
have to complete a separate form. b.
Your responsibility is to make sure your Social
Security number is reported to the counseling office to Mrs. Becker, Counseling
Secretary. c.
The deadline date to submit your information
electronically is March 2, 2003. However, please make sure
your Social Security number - if it
is requested, is turned into the counseling office as soon as possible. d.
It is YOUR
RESPONSIBILITY
to complete the FAFSA form by March 2, 2003.

B. AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 1.
AXA,
in association with US News, will award $670,000 in college scholarships. 2.
Eligibility: a.

should be well-rounded, determined to succeed and have achieved excellence outside the classroom - at a job, sport or
extracurricular activity. 3.
Students

THE JEFF
KROSNOFF SCHOLARSHIP
1. This scholarship is set up in memory of Jeff Krosnoff, a talented
race-car driver and a
published writer. The
scholarship will award $10,000, payable to the college or
university the winner will attend. 2.
Eligibility: a.
Four-year
college bound Senior b. Excellent academic credentials, at least a 3.0 GPA c.
Demonstrate
a breadth of interests d.
Driving
desire to succeed in one’s chosen endeavor e.
Ability
to share your experience through the written word f. Outstanding community citizenship g. Must write an essay: “Many individuals involved in the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001 served as examples of true courage.” Define the word courage by using another example.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, DAVIS – CAL AGGIE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION LEADERSHIP
SCHOLARSHIP 1.
Each
year the Alumni Association awards over 400 honorary Alumni Scholarships a. The
minimum award amount is $1000 for one year and the scholarship is renewable 2.
Eligibility: a.
Must
plan to enter UC, Davis, as a Freshman b.
Must
have an overall GPA of 3.5 or better c.
Must
be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. d.
Must
be available for an interview in Spring, 2003 e.
Must
have demonstrated leadership in extra-curricular school activities, community activities, employment, or personal situations f.
This is a merit scholarship, financial need is not a factor in selecting
Alumni Scholars g.
These
scholarships are designed to recognize student leaders who have a sincere
interest in UC, Davis 3.

For
the 2002-2003 academic year at Davis, a student applying for the Alumni Leadership
Scholarship completes a UC application which is due November 1 to November 30,
2002. 4.

addition, an applicant must submit under separate cover, a one-page essay
addressing the following question:
“Which quality do you possess that identifies you as a leader?
As a UC Davis student, how would
you use this quality to enhance the campus environment?” 5.

famous or not, what would you tell them and why?” 3.

M. YOUTH
OPPORTUNITIES FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS 1.
The
Foundation awards one-time grants which vary from $100 to $500. 2.
Eligibility: a. Only
students of Hispanic origin are eligible. (This
means that at least one
parent must be of Latin American origin.) b. Students
need not be United States citizens. They
must, however, be
residents of California. c.
Must
rank in top 10% of class and must have taken a college-prep curriculum. d.
Must
have a minimum GPA of 3.7 e.
Must
have a total score of at least 1000 on the SAT tests. f.
Must have demonstrated record of leadership activities. g.
Must
have demonstrated financial need. (Example: top income for a family of four,
$50,000 per year.)
