I.    FINANCIAL AID FORMS

      Who should complete the two Financial Aid Forms (FAFSA and GPA Verification Form)?

      A.  Any Senior planning on attending a 4-year College or University, a 2-year Community

           College or a Trade or Vocational School should apply.

      B. The California Student Aid Commission which processes applications for financial

          Aid is encouraging all high school seniors in California to complete the Free

          Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Grade Point Average (GPA)

          Verification form.  Both are to be postmarked no later than March 2, 2003.

1.      The GPA Verification form will be submitted for you electronically this year, which means you will not have to complete a separate form.  However, your Social Security number is needed to do this.  If you received a form from the counseling office requesting your Social Security number, please return it as soon as possible to the counseling office. 

2.      The FAFSA form cannot be sent before January 1, 2003

a.       You are encouraged to apply on-line for the FAFSA.  Right now, you and your

parents can prepare for this by getting a FAFSA Pin.

1.1.            Log on to the Internet and go to www.fafsa.ed.gov . Then click on the

“Getting Started” button and follow the prompts.

                              2.2.   To file a FAFSA online, students need a PIN and parents or guardians

                                      need a PIN too.  So get a PIN for you and your parents or guardians

                                      NOW!!

      C.     Continued Push for “FAFSA on Web”

1.      Use paper FAFSA as a worksheet.

2.      FAFSA on Web – It can edit errors; much more efficient.                                 

      D.     Once your GPA is submitted electronically, you are eligible for Cal Grant Awards.

3.      Cal Grant A Entitlement Award –

a.  Must have financial need

b.      Must have 3.0 GPA

c. Must file a FAFSA, preferably on line. (beginning January 1, 2003 and

no later than March 2, 2003). 

d.      Must file GPA Verification form.  Yours will be submitted electronically for you.

e. This award pays full fees at CSU and UC campuses.  It also provides

                                      tuition support at private California colleges and universities.

3.      Cal Grant B Entitlement Award –

a. Must have financial need

b.      Must have 2.0 GPA

c. Must file a FAFSA, preferable on line (beginning January 2, 2003 and

no later than March 2, 2003).

d.      Must file GPA Verification form.  Yours will be submitted electronically for you.

e. This award provides up to $1551 for books and living expenses for the

                                      for the first year.  Beginning with the second year, this award also helps

pay for tuition and fees at public or private 4-year colleges.

4.      Cal Grant A, B and C Competitive Awards

a.   These awards are similar to Cal Grant A and B Entitlement Awards except that

      they are not guaranteed.

b.   Cal Grant A Competitive Awards are for students with a minimum 3.0 GPA

      from low to middle income families.

c.   Cal Grant B Competitive Awards are for students with a minimum 2.0 GPA

      and are from disadvantaged and low income families.

d.   Cal Grant C Competitive Awards assist students with tuition, fees and training

      costs for occupational and vocational programs. 

5.      Submitting the GPA Verification Form

a. For the first time, the information needed for this form will be submitted electronically.  You DO NOT have to complete a separate form.

b.      Your responsibility is to make sure your Social Security number is reported to the counseling office to Mrs. Becker, Counseling Secretary.

c. The deadline date to submit your information electronically is March 2, 2003. 

However, please make sure your Social Security number  - if it is requested, is turned into the counseling office as soon as possible.

d.      It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to complete the FAFSA form by March 2, 2003.

                                  

II.  DEADLINE DATES FOR PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED SCHOLARSHIPS AND

       AWARDS

                           

A.      CSU CHICO – DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

1.  Deadline Date:  January 29, 2003.

B.      CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, CHICO SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

1.  Deadline Date:  Applications must be submitted electronically by midnight, Pacific

     Daylight Time, February 1, 2003.

C.     THE CHRISTERMON FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

      1.  Deadline Date:  February 1, 2003. 

D.     MARY C. AND WILLIAM G. DRAKE SCHOLARSHIP

1.   Deadline Date:  Postmarked by February 5, 2003

E.      DE VRY INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIPS

1.   Deadline Date:   March 7, 2003.

F.      COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY CONTEST ON AYN RAND’S NOVEL THE FOUNTAINHEAD

1.   Deadline Date:  April 15, 2003.

G.     NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF THEATRE OWNERS OF CALIFORNIA/NEVADA (NATO)

1.   Deadline Date:   May 1, 2003. 

III.  NEW SCHOLARSHIP AND AWARD ANNOUNCEMENTS (More information and the

         applications regarding these scholarships are available in the Counseling Office.)

 

      A.   U.S. BANK SCHOLARSHIP

1.      Thirty (30) $1000 scholarships will be awarded.

2.      Eligibility:

a. Must plan to attend a two or four-year college full-time, Fall 2003.

b.      Students with strong academic achievement or who excel in school and

community involvement encouraged to apply.

                 3    DEADLINE DATE:  February 28, 2003.

 

      B. AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

1.     AXA, in association with US News, will award $670,000 in college scholarships.

2.     Eligibility:

a.      You should be well-rounded, determined to succeed and have achieved excellence

outside the classroom - at a job, sport or extracurricular activity.

3.     Students must visit the AXA website at www.axa-achievement.com and download the

application. 

4.     DEADLINE DATE:  December 15, 2002.

 

C.         THE JEFF KROSNOFF SCHOLARSHIP

       1. This scholarship is set up in memory of Jeff Krosnoff, a talented race-car driver and a

     published writer.  The scholarship will award $10,000, payable to the college or

     university the winner will attend.

2.     Eligibility:

a.      Four-year college bound Senior

b.     Excellent academic credentials, at least a 3.0 GPA

c.      Demonstrate a breadth of interests

d.     Driving desire to succeed in one’s chosen endeavor

e.      Ability to share your experience through the written word

f.       Outstanding community citizenship

g.      Must write an essay:  “Many individuals involved in the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001 served as examples of true courage.”  Define the word courage by using another example.

         3.  DEADLINE DATE: January 13, 2003.

 

D.    UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, DAVIS – CAL AGGIE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

1.     Each year the Alumni Association awards over 400 honorary Alumni Scholarships

a.  The minimum award amount is $1000 for one year and the scholarship is renewable

2.     Eligibility:

a.      Must plan to enter UC, Davis, as a Freshman

b.     Must have an overall GPA of 3.5 or better

c.      Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.

d.     Must be available for an interview in Spring, 2003

e.      Must have demonstrated leadership in extra-curricular school activities, community

activities, employment, or personal situations

f.       This is a merit scholarship, financial need is not a factor in selecting Alumni Scholars

g.      These scholarships are designed to recognize student leaders who have a sincere interest

in UC, Davis

3.     The instructions and criteria for the scholarship also appear on page 37 of the UC application

a.       For the 2002-2003 academic year at Davis, a student applying for the Alumni

Leadership Scholarship completes a UC application which is due November 1

to November 30, 2002.

4.     In addition, an applicant must submit under separate cover, a one-page essay addressing the

following question:  “Which quality do you possess that identifies you as a leader?  As a UC

Davis student, how would you use this quality to enhance the campus environment?”

    E.   DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (DAR) – AMERICAN HISTORY 

              SCHOLARSHIP

1.     A scholarship is the amount of $2000 each year for up to 4 years will be awarded to

a graduating high school senior who will be majoring in American History.

             2.  DEADLINE DATE:  February 1, 2003.

    

 

E.     DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (DAR) – ENID HALL

GRISWOLD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP     

1.     A one time $1000 scholarship to students accepted in an accredited college or

university in the U.S. who are majoring in Political Science, History, Government

or Economics

2.      DEADLINE DATE:  February 15, 2003                                                                                   

      G.    EMERGING YOUNG ARTIST AWARD

     1.   Enables students to pursue their dreams of becoming professional artists – up to $5000

                     per year for 4 years.

           2.   Eligibility:

a.       Must demonstrate need of financial assistance

b.      Must be legal resident of California

c.       Must plan to enter 4 year institution or accredited training program

d.      Must pursue study in Dance, Music, Theatre or Visual Arts

e.       Application fee of $10 is also required

H.    RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES / AFRICAN AMERICAN FUTURE

ACHIEVERS SCHOLARSHIP

1.  Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) awards African American students $1000

     scholarships.

2.  Eligibility:

     a.  U.S. Citizens and Legal Permanent Residents who have at least one parent of African

          American heritage are eligible to apply

     b.  Must enroll in and attend a 2 or 4 year college in the Fall, 2003, and carry a full course

           study

     c.  Must submit a personal statement that provides information about your African American

           background, current community involvement and potential future contributions to the

           African American community based on your career goals

     d.  Must submit a one page letter of recommendation, preferably from an official of the high

           school

     e.  Must submit a transcript in a sealed envelope

     f.   Applications are also available on the www.rmhc.org web site

3.  DEADLINE DATE:  February 1, 2003, postmark deadline.

  

  I.   RONALD McDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES / HISPANIC AMERICAN

      FUTURE ACHIEVERS SCHOLARSHIP – (RMHC/HACER)

           1. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) awards Hispanic students $1000  

          scholarships.

           2.  Eligibility

a.   US Citizens and Legal permanent Residents who have at least one parent of

      Hispanic heritage are eligible to apply.

b.      Must enroll in and attend a 2 or 4 year college in the Fall, 2003 and carry a

full course of study.

c.       Must submit a personal statement that provides information about your

Hispanic background, current community involvement and potential future

contributions to the Hispanic community based on your career goals.

d.      Must submit a one page letter of recommendation, preferably from an

official of the high school

e.       Must submit a transcript in a sealed envelope.

 J.  RONALD McDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES / ASIA  FUTURE ACHIEVERS
       SCHOLARSHIP
        1. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) awards Asian students $1000    
             scholarships.

           2  Eligibility:

   a.   US Citizens and Legal permanent Residents who have at least one parent of

        Asian heritage are eligible to apply.

                b.   Must enroll in and attend a 2 or 4 year college in the Fall, 2003, and carry a

  full course of study.

                c.   Must submit a personal statement that provides information about your

  Asian background, current community involvement and potential future

  contributions to the Asian community based on your career goals.

                d.   Must submit a one page letter of recommendtion, preferably from an

  official of the high school

e.      Must submit a transcript in a sealed envelope.

K.   HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND

1.      Scholarships ranging from $1000 to $2500 will be awarded.

2.      Eligibility:

a.       Must be of Hispanic heritage (one parent fully Hispanic or each parent half Hispanic)

b.      Must have a 3.0 minimum GPA

c.       Must plan to enroll in a community college (with intent to transfer) or a four year college

full-time in Fall, 2003

    L.    INVERNESS “IS ALL EARS” CONTEST

1.   Awards ranging from $1000 to $5000 are being offered.

         2.   Eligibility

a.  Must be 14 – 19 years of age

b.  Must submit essay in 150 words or less, “If you had the ear of one special person,

     famous or not, what would you tell them and why?”

3.     DEADLINE DATE:  On-line entries:  www.invernesscorp.com/contest due by

     11:59 p.m. March 28, 2003.  Mail entries due March 7, 2003 (must be received by this       date – not a postmark deadline).

     

   M.   YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS

1.     The Foundation awards one-time grants which vary from $100 to $500.

2.     Eligibility:

a.  Only students of Hispanic origin are eligible.  (This means that at least one

     parent must be of Latin American origin.)

b.  Students need not be United States citizens.  They must, however, be

     residents of California.

c.      Must rank in top 10% of class and must have taken a college-prep curriculum.

d.     Must have a minimum GPA of 3.7

e.      Must have a total score of at least 1000 on the SAT tests.

f.       Must have demonstrated record of leadership activities.

g.      Must have demonstrated financial need. (Example: top income for a family of four, $50,000 per year.)

         3.  DEADLINE DATE:  Application period is from December 1, 2002 to February 28, 2003.

a.  Applicants must apply by writing a letter requesting an

      application to the Foundation directly to:

                                                     Must include self-addressed, stamped envelope.

b.     All application materials must be submitted by

February 28, 2003.

 

N.      ITT TECHNICAL INSTITUTE OF RANCHO CORDOVA

1.  Eight scholarships will be awarded:

     a.  Two, each totaling $2500 toward the Associate of Science degree in Computer and

          Electronics Engineering Technology.

     b.  Two, each totaling $2500 toward the Associate of Science degree in Computer Drafting

          and Design.

     c.  Two, each totaling $2500 toward the Associate of Science degree in Information

          Technology (Computer Network Systems Web Development, Multimedia or Software

          Application and Programming).

2.  Eligibility:

     a.  Applicant must agree to begin in the session starting June, 2003

     b.  Scholarships will be awarded based upon recommendations, academic records and an

          an essay indicating interest and desire in completing a technical degree program

     c.  Applicants must submit the following:

          11.  Two letters of recommendation from people not related to you:  Teachers, counselors,

                 employers, civic leaders, etc.

          22.  Essay of a minimum of 250 words explaining in detail the following:  “Why you want

                 a career in this particular field, why you feel you would be successful with your

                 education at ITT and any other information you feel to be of significance in your

                 consideration of this scholarship.

3.     DEADLINE DATE:  April 21, 2003

 

O.   FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCE RELATED CAREERS STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP

        1.  Three $250 scholarships will be awarded.

        2.  Eligibility:

             a.  Students must be seeking a career in Consumer Science, Child Development and Education,

                  Food Science, Dietetics and Nutrition, Food Service and Hospitality, Fashion Design,

                  Manufacturing and Merchandising, Interior Design and Furnishings and who will enter an

                  accredited college or technical school in Northern California.

             b.  Must submit high school transcript

             c.  Must include two letters of recommendation

             d.  Must include brief paragraphs of information about yourself (see application)

        3.  DEADLINE DATE:  March 14, 2003, postmark deadline

IV.  MOST IMPORTANT REMINDER:

        A.  Financial Aid Forms are due March 2, 2003.

              1.  Whether you are going to a 4-year college or university, or a 2-year community

                   college or a trade or vocational school, it is to your advantage to complete

                   these forms.

              2.  FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is to be mailed before                                                 March 2, 2003.

              3.  GPA Verification deadline is March 2, 2003.

                   a.  This form will be submitted electronically for you

                   b.  It is your responsibility to make sure your Social Security number is submitted to

                        the counseling office.

                   c.  The GPA Verification form makes you eligible for CAL GRANTS which can only

                        be used at California schools – 4-year college or university, 2-year community college

                        or trade or vocational school.

 

V.     FINANCIAL AID PARENT/GUARDIAN/STUDENT INFORMATION  NIGHT

A.  Financial Aid Information Night will be held Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at 7:00 P.M.

B.  All seniors and their parents are encouraged to attend.

 

VI.    BUTTE COLLEGE APPLICATIONS / REG-TO-GO PROGRAM

A.     November 22, 2002  -  Butte College Counselor and Financial Aid and EOP Representatives

visited Economics  and Government classes to introduce Butte College and the Reg-To-Go program.

        B.  Reg-To-Go Four-step Process:

      a.   Orientation at Butte College:  February 20 or April 8

    b.  Assessment Test at OHS for placement in Butte College classes:  March 13 or

   April 23

    c.  Conference with Butte College Counselor to select classes and Telephone

         Registration for Butte classes:  May 6 and 7.

    d.   Payment of Butte College fees:  date to be announced.  

        C.   Butte College Applications should be completed and returned to the counseling office by

               December 18.

               1.  If you have previously  completed a Butte College application, you must submit another

                    application for the Reg-To-Go Program.

                       a.  On the front page of the second Butte application, please print “2nd Butte

                            Application

        D.  First Butte College Orientation on February 20, 2003.

              1.   To attend, you must have returned to the counseling office a completed Butte College

                    application.

              2.   Permission slips for your parent/guardians and teachers to sign will be available January,

                    2003.

VII.   CHIROPRACTIC CAREER NIGHT IN CHICO SPONSORED BY LIFE

           CHIROPRACTIC COLLEGE WEST
