English 9 - This course
is required for all English proficient freshmen. The class covers a
variety of literature from a variety of time periods: Romeo and
Juliet, Of Mice and Men, The Miracle Worker, The Old Man and the
Sea, Shane, and more. Ninth
grade writing assignments
include autobiographical writes and formal interpretive essays.
Emphasis is placed on grammatical conventions, including proper
spelling and vocabulary usage. Oral presentations, such as a
demonstration speech, are part of the course curriculum.
English 9 ELD - This
course meets the English 9 requirement for all beginning non-native
English speakers. Students become more proficient in English
through exposure all parts of the freshman core.
Advanced Placement
11-Language and Composition - This is an accelerated English course
designed to prepare students for college level work and offer the
opportunity of earning college credit by passing the Advanced
Placement Exam. The study of world literature focuses on works of
recognized literary merit. Students give oral presentations and
respond to literature using a variety of approaches. Interpretive
essays are emphasized.
Background
Mrs. Steinhaus has a BA in
English and an MA in Language Arts/Media, both from California State
University, Chico.
She spends her free time
reading, gardening, traveling, and playing with her dogs. Her
husband, John, is also a high school English teacher, and her two
daughters are students.
