Writing

Students will collect a portfolio/stringbook of their writing, artwork, photos, etc. for each semester, including news, sports, feature, editorial, and review. Students will work in read-around-groups to assist with revision.

Course Overview

Each student will research, interview, and write at least two articles per issue. Students will conduct interviews and work on articles during class, as well as at home. If necessary, students must come in at lunch or after school to finish a story for a deadline. In addition, students will write essays and discuss/debate current issues in journalism and the news. There will be daily class assignments based on writing, types of leads, vocabulary, usage, punctuation, editing, interviewing, and newspaper production, as well as press law and ethical issues. Since The Times is supported by ad sales completely, students are required to sell a minimum of 8 ads (one year's worth.) It's much easier to sell them at the beginning of the year than at the end. CLASS WORK: All work will be graded; late work will be marked down and may not appear in the paper if deadline is missed.

Grading

Grades will be calculated using a percentage score:
A = 90-100, B = 80-89, C = 70-79, D = 60-69, and below = F.

Assignments are weighted in the following manner:
Stories: 3x
Quizzes & Tests: 2x
Daily class work, discussion: 1x

*Note: If ads aren't sold by end of 1st quarter, student will receive an F.
