Principal's Message
[top]
|
Dear Parents, Students and Visitors to our Website:
It is with great pleasure that the staff and I welcome you to another school year with our Challenge Charter High School Community. We look forward to working with you, the parents, in the important task of helping your children develop to their fullest potential academically, emotionally and socially. We have talented teaching staff that show their commitment to teaching through effective methodologies, professional development and an infusion of technology. We continue to educate students who are ready for the 21st century and we value excellence and expect our students to achieve their personal best in all endeavors.
We recognize that parents/guardians are the prime educators of their children and we welcome and encourage your support in our efforts in working with our students - your children. The fundamental nature of a school changes from year to year, depending on the children and families that choose to become a part of this community. You and your children will change who we are, just as Challenge Charter High School will change who you are. I look forward to undertaking this exciting adventure with you.
It is a proven fact that: “When parents participate, children do better in school, but more than that, they go to better schools.”

What is a Charter School?
[top]

A Charter School is a nonsectarian,
tuition-free, public elementary or secondary school that is
exempt from significant state or local rules that inhibit the
flexible operation and management of public schools. Charters
are created by a developer as a public school or adapted by a
developer from an existing public school, and are operated under
public supervision and direction. They operate under state
charter laws in pursuit of a specific set of educational
objectives determined by the school’s developer and agreed to by
the authorized public chartering agency. All charters have a
written performance contract with a public chartering agency
that includes a description of how student performance will be
measured pursuant to state assessments that are required of
other schools. Charters also comply with federal civil rights
laws and IDEA, and applicable federal, state and local health,
safety and audit requirements. (sec. 5210(1)).
Advocacy
[top]
In order for
charter schools like Challenge Charter to grow, improve and flourish,
we need parents and community members to become actively involved
in promoting our school and others like us. Listed below are just
a few of the links to websites which focus on charter schools. Most
of them offer a list serve option that allows you to be connected
to the world of charters. Please take some time to review these
sites, sign up if you are interested and find out more about the
great work of charter schools in California and the United States!
The principal at Challenge
Charter is available to provide a PowerPoint presentation for
local service and community groups. The presentation focuses on
charter schools in general and specifically the story of Challenge
Charter. If you belong to a service club or group, please call
Walt Gess at (530) 538-2359 or email
wgess@ouhsd.org
regarding a presentation.

Options for Students
Study Skills:
All students in all grade
levels will be enrolled in a study skills course which is designed
to assist them in learning about learning, time management, how to
study, how to take notes and how to be successful in
school.
AVID: For students who feel ready to
accept the challenge of a four year college or university, AVID is
another study/college preparatory option.
Concurrent enrollment:
All students who attend
Challenge Charter High School have the option of being
concurrently enrolled at Butte Community College, Yuba College or
California State University, Chico. This means that a student can
take high school courses and college courses at the same
time.
Advanced Placement Courses:
Currently we offer an Advanced Placement
English, Biology, Calculus, and we are developing Advanced
Placement Chemistry and Physics.
Reading: Currently we offer three
sections of a reading course which uses the computer software
called: Fast For Word. Students who are struggling with reading
are enrolled in this course which lasts from 4-8 weeks. Students
train and work daily on a computer to improve their reading
skills. At Challenge Charter High School we encounter many
students who are struggling with reading. Fast For Word can help
these students improve their reading skills in as little as four
weeks.
ROP courses: Through Butte County Office
of Education Regional Occupational Program, there are a variety of
courses offered throughout the county which focus on vocational
and technical skills. These courses are open to students who
attend Challenge Charter High School.
Off-Site courses: Sometimes a student may
wish to take a class that is offered by Oroville High School or
Las Plumas High School. Through an agreement established by the
Oroville Union High School District, students may enroll in
courses on either campus and earn credits for that
course.
Study Skills Support:
Because all students enrolled
in high school are required to pass the California High School
Exit Exam, we are offering a variety of support classes for
students who have not passed this exam. These support options
include specific classes and tutoring which may be during school
or after school.
